 February 14-20 is School Board Member Recognition Week in Mississippi :: MSBA resources are availalble to help you as you plan, or put the finishing touches on, your activities for the special observance of School Board Member Recognition Week in Mississippi. Governor Haley Barbour's proclamation of the week can be viewed by clicking here. MSBA will mail school districts a copy of the Governor's Proclamation as well as appreciation certificates for board members by January 31. Here are other resources:

| Davis Named Statewide Board Member of the Year :: Carroll County board president Laura Davis has been selected MSBA’s inaugural Board Member of the Year. She was recognized on Tuesday, November 17 during the Lighthouse School Leader Awards Luncheon, held in conjunction with the MSBA Fall Leadership Conference. A member of her local board for more than 30 years, Davis was chosen from among 19 board members statewide who were nominated for the honor.
| Districts Recognized as Lighthouse School Leaders :: Twelve Mississippi school districts were recognized in three categories for high student achievement on Tuesday, November 17 in the MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program. The MSBA recognition program applauds school districts for high student performance based on standards set in the state’s new accountability system. District leaders were recognized at the MSBA Lighthouse School Leaders Awards Luncheon during MSBA’s Fall Leadership Conference.

| Impact of State Budget Cuts Announced :: The Mississippi Department of Education has just released to school districts a revised allocation of Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) funding, based on the 5% across the board budget cuts announced recently by Governor Haley Barbour. Buget cuts range from a high of about $6 million each for the DeSoto County and Jackson Public school districts to right around $43,000 each for the Clay County School District and Hinds County AHS. | "Race to the Top" fund encourages higher student achievement :: The U.S. Department of Education is making available funding through a new Race to the Top Fund, which provides competitive grants to encourage and reward states that are cultivating climates for education innovation and reform; implementing ambitious plans in the four education reform areas described in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA); and achieving significant improvement in student outcomes. Race to the Top grants are expected to be awarded in two phases: Phase 1 will open for applications by the end of 2009, with grants made in early 2010. Phase 2 applications will be taken in late Spring of 2010 and awarded in September 2010.
